So Many Choices

If you're learning to play guitar, here are some valuable tips about buying your first instrument.

There are so many choices in guitars; acoustic 6 string, acoustic 12 string, acoustic classical, electric 6 string, electric 12 string, etc. How do you know what to look for?

Well there's a pretty simple formula which will elimiate much of the confusion and many of the choices for the beginner.

Playability, playability, playability

No this wasn't a typo.

If you can't comfortably play your new guitar, it will adversely affect your ability to learn this new skill. You must be comfortable in holding the guitar, which means that you need to make sure you're buying the right size.

The neck must also be the right size for your left hand or you'll not be able to produce the notes properly. Straining your hand over time can also produce physical damage such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Neck Curvage

Neck curvage is an issue with many guitars. If the neck is not straight, the guitar will produce notes which are more out of tune as you move up the fingerboard. You need to especially watch for "positive neck curve". This is where the neck curves toward the strings when the instument is lying on its back. This would need to be professionally corrected, if possible at all.

Strings Need To Be Close

The strings need to be as close to the fingerboard as possible without interfereing with the frets. If the strings are too far from the fingerboard, they will be too difficult to press in order to produce the desired note with clarity.

If the strings are too close to the frets, you will hear a buzzing sound.

Neck and Bridge Adjustments

You will not find a guitar shipped from the factory that is in playing condition. All new guitars require proper set up. The factory settings are designed to reduce damage during shipping. Neck and bridge adjustments will always need to be done by your retailer before the instrument will provide you with a good level of playability.

Dont Spend Too Much

Don't spend too much on your first guitar. You can easily get a good acoustic 6 string for around $200.00. Spending more doesn't make sense. Once you've learned to play a bit, you'll be in a better position to determine what you really want and can upgrade at that time. Another good tip is to pass on the all-in package deals found at department stores. These are typically good toys rather than good musical instruments.

Service:Before and After Your Purchase

As you can likely tell from the above, service is the most important feature to look for when shopping for a new guitar. A good Music Store will provide proper set up of the instrument before you take it home, and will also provide a long term guarantee to ensure your satisfaction. Although you can buy guitars at big box outlets and online, they cannot provide you with this degree of service.

You'll be much happier if you accept professional advice from your music teacher and music store retailer.
